tools and were apparently diligent in their work I have repeatedly asked CHUM to help secure the premises as they own and operate the neighbouring property and they do have a large security contingent adjacent to the property CHUM communications adviser Nathalie Forgue said responsibility for the building s security remains with the owners until the building is sold CHUM doesn t own it yet so there is not much we can do she said We are still evaluating what our assets will be It is understood the CHUM had planned to return some of the windows to the Syriac community which plans to build a new cathedral in the city s north end Others were destined for the Musee des maitres et artisans du Quebec in St Laurent The church was originally called Holy Trinity when it was built in 1865 for an Anglican congregation from the imperial garrison in Montreal It was endowed by William Molson s wife After the First World War it was sold to the Syriac Catholic congregation an Eastern Rite sect that is in communion with Rome but whose headquarters are in Beirut There are an estimated 5 000 Syriac Catholics in the Montreal area Rene Angelil husband of singer Celine Dion was baptized in the church When developers bought the structure in 2000 there was talk of turning it into a live jazz supper club and spa There were also rumours it would become a recording studio a sushi bar and a rave palace Despite its pedigree the building with its 52 metre spire has never been declared a historic property Its windows had been covered with plywood which thieves apparently removed Most of the chancel s stained glass windows produced by the J C Spence glassworks of Montreal are intact They are dedicated to the memory of Rev Mark Willoughby an Anglican priest who died of typhus in 1847 tending to Irish immigrants The two Nincheri windows one of the Ascension of Jesus the other of the Assumption were added in 1923 after fire gutted the interior of the church Both windows are something of a mystery they are signed by the artist and dated 1913 but Nincheri who excelled in sacred art didn t arrive in Montreal from his native Italy until the following year Most of the windows in the building are by the celebrated Canadian stained glass artist John Patrick O Shea and at least one is by the Hobbs Manufacturing Co also of Montreal controleman 8 years ago I don t have much more to say than adding some pictures to this http controleman wordpress com 2008 01 04 sauvons leglise saint sauveur lagatta de montreal 8 years ago That is horrible A friend of mine of Coptic Christian ancestry had her funeral at that church I worked at the CSN labour confederation for many years when it was at 1001 St Denis opposite that beautiful church It would really be a pity if it couldn t be

  • Expanding a museum, saving a church - Spacing Montreal
the year the Museum of Fine Arts will start work on a new expansion that will engulf the former Erskine and American Church located across the street at the corner of Sherbrooke and du Musée Built in 1910 the church contains one of the world s most important collections of Tiffany stained glass windows Its interior and exterior will be restored while a new museum building designed to house the MFA s collection of Canadian art is built around it As attendance at many of Montreal s traditional Catholic and Protestant churches dwindles we re faced with the question of what to do with all of these old buildings There isn t any obvious way to reuse them since their design is so inflexible and they usually contain so many sensitive architectural elements especially inside So far churches in Montreal have been converted into libraries community centres and of course condominiums But conversion is often a costly endeavour and many ordinary parish churches just aren t worth the effort Not every church unfortunately can become part of a museum See mtlurb com for more information on the MFA expansion Subscribe to Mag Share Post Tweet Post Buy Merch andise Related Posts This Tiny Abandoned Church Perfectly Captures Villeray s Changing Past Rethinking Brossard s Panama Hub Montreal Metro Photo Project Captures Design in Motion Tweet More posts by Christopher DeWolf Neither the author nor Spacing necessarily agrees with posted comments Spacing reserves the right to edit or delete comments entirely See our Comment Policy Leave a Reply Cancel reply Your email address will not be published Required fields are marked Name Email Website Comment Search Advertisement Spacing Magazine fall 2015 Order issue Subscribe In these stores Popular Posts Montage du jour L orphelinat Notre Dame de Liesse et la crèche

  • 100, Somerville - Spacing Montreal

  • Walk the Region & Montreal's Invisible Places: Kahnawake - Spacing Montreal
welcomed us with open arms and even offered to organize an opening ceremony While most people I meet think it s a little odd to walk over 75 km through an essentially urban area without at least trying to raise money for something Stewart and the other council members we met seemed to intuitively understand our desire to simply experience the lay of this land we inhabit and to share this knowledge with other citizens of the region As Joel said We re crossing bridges by foot to build bridges between communities On Saturday morning Stewart led the opening ceremony and presented the Two Row Wampum the beaded belt in the photo above a symbol of the historic 5 nations peace treaty with the Dutch in the 17th century The two parallel rows represent the Iroquois and the European peoples leading parallel lives peacefully but never intersecting so as to preserve the native culture Stewart s family has certainly maintained a beautiful piece of green land garden and the most awesome junglegym I have ever seen But Kahnawake has seen it s share of struggles over land use Stewart s elderly father spoke of how his own mother had fought to save this land from being sold from the Mohawk Nation or converted into a casino Stewart described the Saint Lawrence seaway as a weapon of destruction due to the way it divided the Mohawks land in 1953 and removed the people s access to the river you can read a whole academic article about it here As we walked through the community accompanied by a small caravan of minivans Stewart also described how some local residents were renting their land as a dump for landfill earth and other materials at 10 per truckload He pointed out a building on the reservation where a number of online dating and gambling sites have their headquarters and it struck me how surprising it was to see the mark of these ephemeral Internet trends on the landscape After about two hours we reached the edge of the reservation or as Stewart said the imaginary imposed border of Kahnawake Wahéhshon the Mother of the Wolf clan presented me with a beaded necklace meant to protect us throughout our travels We bid our hosts adieu and crossed from the lush green of Kanhawake into the technicolor train yards of Sainte Catherine Subscribe to Mag Share Post Tweet Post Buy Merch andise Related Posts Rethinking Brossard s Panama Hub Tweet More posts by Alanah Heffez One comment Neither the author nor Spacing necessarily agrees with posted comments Spacing reserves the right to edit or delete comments entirely See our Comment Policy Daniel David 3 years ago I missed your posts I look forward to reading them Glad you re back from abroad and in fine writing form I ve been following the posts Walking and Invisible series with interest I noted your reference to the black hole that exists for Kahnawake on the CMM map If
