    August 28 2014 Rachel Engler Stringer PhD Principal Investigator Nazeem Muhajarine PhD Co Principal Investigator The neighbourhoods in which we live and how easily we can access nutritious food sometimes called the food environment particularly for our children can make a difference in children s health This study will help us understand the food environment for families with children aged 10 13 years in Saskatoon and its impact on obesity and overweight in children The first part of the study surveyed where grocery and convenience stores and fast food restaurants in Saskatoon are located and how nutritious the foods are that they carry A dietary assessment survey of children in 20 neighbourhoods was then undertaken to help understand the relationships between diet quality body weight and the food environment in Saskatoon neighbourhoods Goals Outcomes By linking the nutritional health of children in Saskatoon to the accessibility of healthy food in their neighbourhoods we hope to support the development of improvements to health policy and practice in the city and also provide information that can benefit children and families elsewhere This project is part of the Smart Cities Healthy Kids research program Please see the SCHK website for more project information
