  • OHL Rangers' Roberts excelled at World U-17s - Sportsnet.ca
him because those are the kind of guys you want to go to battle with Roberts competitive nature was on display throughout the tournament He didn t hesitate to engage physically in front of the net or in the corner of the rink he seemed to thrive in the middle of the action That he s 5 foot 8 and just 154 lb never seems to have entered his mind He s a fast skater very mobile very aggressive on the ice said one scout He s been very aggressive at the OHL level too He s just a good kid he skates hard and he works hard That mobility and aggression have enabled Roberts to play a position which is generally reserved for bigger skaters He s a regular with the OHL s Kitchener Rangers having played in 12 games already At the U 17 tournament he was the lone left shooting defenceman on his team asked to cross over and play on the starboard side That allowed him to spend most of the tournament on a pairing with 6 foot 1 212 lb Yan Aucoin a QMJHL defender who also happened to be the heaviest defenceman on the roster Roberts didn t stay in that role though Walker used him in a variety of roles top pair left side right side and he used him a lot Just being on the roster was something of a triumph playing such important minutes was even more validation that anything is possible even for a 5 foot 8 defenceman That validation should give Roberts confidence through the hard times he ll undoubtedly experience as he continues to pursue hockey His size means he ll always be questioned and one scout I spoke to suggested that hockey sense was an issue at times too Hockey Canada didn t have him on its roster in the summer that won t be the last time in Roberts career that he s looked over by scouts and managers But this fall Roberts proved that he wasn t just capable of playing against the world s best players in his age group he showed he was able to excel as part of a championship team He answered doubters with a strong performance it s something he ll need to do again and again as he tries to work his way to the NHL 2Fhockey 2Fjuniors 2Fohl rangers roberts excelled at world u 17s 2F Join the Discussion EDITORS PICKS McDavid looks for silver lining in injury situation 2 hours ago How Holm derailed the Rousey hype train 4 hours ago Will Donaldson get long term offer from Jays this winter 11 hours ago Matt Duchene handling Avalanche trade rumours like a pro 2 hours ago The time Michael Jordan carried Max Domi 7 hours ago Bases Covered Could Cueto land with the Yankees 4 hours ago Forrest They threw bags of urine at us 5 hours ago NHL commissioner Gary Bettman s latest salary revealed 10

  • Spitfires' Vilardi a top 2017 NHL Draft prospect - Sportsnet.ca
to play without the puck a little more It makes sense if you play right you get your chances in the offensive zone Still it s his offensive game that really has NHL teams excited He s a very skilled player with good size said another scout He sees plays quickly and he makes plays quickly Obviously he has a very good shot While the scouts I talked to all agreed that size passing and shooting are all gifts there were some slight reservations about his skating Skating while good needs some work said a scout He could work on his overall quickness Added another scout His skating isn t a concern at this point Sometimes with bigger kids it takes a little while for them to grow into their frame and the skating comes with that The potential is there for Vilardi to be the complete package He s already 6 foot 2 and 185 lb despite having just turned 16 in August so he has the pro frame His skating is already good and should be better still by the time he competes for NHL employment in 2017 18 He can shoot he can pass he can think the game and he doesn t mind going into traffic with or without the puck There was a play in the preliminary round against the Czechs that didn t result in a goal but was a great example of Vilardi s ability Defending against an opposition rush he stole the puck at centre ice carried it into the offensive zone and then drew two defenders to himself before passing off to a teammate in open ice In one play he showed good positional awareness defensively the intelligence to take advantage of an opportunity and force a turnover and then the hockey sense and passing vision to get the puck to an open man after drawing double coverage It was an impressive play but then he s an impressive player He s a great player sees the game really well raved teammate Evan Bouchard who along with Vilardi manned the point on Canada s first power play unit It s great to play with him 2Fhockey 2Fjuniors 2Fspitfires vilardi a top 2017 nhl draft prospect 2F Join the Discussion EDITORS PICKS McDavid looks for silver lining in injury situation 2 hours ago How Holm derailed the Rousey hype train 4 hours ago Will Donaldson get long term offer from Jays this winter 11 hours ago Matt Duchene handling Avalanche trade rumours like a pro 2 hours ago The time Michael Jordan carried Max Domi 7 hours ago Bases Covered Could Cueto land with the Yankees 5 hours ago Forrest They threw bags of urine at us 5 hours ago NHL commissioner Gary Bettman s latest salary revealed 10 hours ago MOST DISCUSSED Red hot Rangers score late to end Maple Leafs win streak 291 COMMENTS Will Donaldson get long term offer from Blue Jays this off season 85 COMMENTS Mayweather 50

  • Canadian goalies shine at U-17 Challenge - Sportsnet.ca
Draft in the summer of 2017 Scott may be the best Canadian goaltender in his age group but he won t be unchallenged Kris Knoblauch who coached Canada Red puts forward his starter Michael DiPietro of the Windsor Spitfires as the best goalie in the tournament though he did so with mixed emotions I thought throughout the tournament he played very well says the Erie Otters bench boss Of the goalies I saw I thought he was the best I only have good things to say about him Unfortunately he s in the same league as me so I m going to see a lot of him in the future DiPietro finished the tournament with a 3 1 1 record and and his 929 save percentage was second best save at the event Like Scott he played three games in three days but he also played more games in the preliminary round of the event He ended up leading the tournament with 308 minutes played in the span of just seven days It might well have been DiPietro with the gold medal draped around his neck instead of Scott if not for heartbreak in the semifinals against Russia He saved 31 of 33 shots in that game 939 save percentage and stopped five of six shooters in the shootout but nobody on his team was able to score in the extra round and as a result he ended up with the 3 2 loss Like Scott DiPietro has been very good at the junior level with a 4 1 0 record for Windsor and 943 save percentage He was a second round pick in the 2015 OHL Priority Draft and his modest size 6 foot 198 lb is a bit of a concern but his play has been outstanding Overshadowed by Scott and DiPietro was Alex D Orio the No 9 overall pick in the 2015 QMJHL Draft D Orio who s still playing midget AAA in Quebec did manage to outperform teammate and St Mike s Buzzer Jake McGrath who struggled but he was decidedly outmatched by Czech Tomas Vomacka in his final game of the tournament coming out on the wrong side of a 3 2 decision which condemned Canada Black to last place at the event D Orio nevertheless has NHL size 6 foot 2 198 lb and will be in the running for future international events He did not however help himself at this tournament Scott came in with high expectations and delivered on them confirming his status as a top end goaltending prospect The player who helped himself the most however may have been DiPietro who came in with relatively modest expectations and took a back seat to nobody 2Fhockey 2Fjuniors 2Fcanadian goalies shine at u 17 challenge 2F Join the Discussion EDITORS PICKS McDavid looks for silver lining in injury situation 2 hours ago How Holm derailed the Rousey hype train 4 hours ago Will Donaldson get long term offer from Jays this winter
