be true if people know someone too well it may be hard to believe that the person is really special Jesus knew all this He knew people s mind He knew that people only look for signs and wonders Show us sign and wonders Show us that you are special Prove that you are the Messiah They must have demanded They accepted signs and wonders but not the person Jesus It reminds me something of a Jewish rabbi Jacob Neusner a world famous scholar on Judaism wrote about Jesus In his book he shows great respect for Jesus He is impressed and moved by Jesus teachings He says that he would have joined the crowd who followed Jesus However he concludes that he would have left the crowd in the end because Jesus takes an important step in the wrong direction Neusner could not go along with the shift from the Law of the Jewish community to Jesus as the central authority since the master Jesus makes a demand that only God makes In his teaching Jesus declared two things the good news was for the poor and he was God s Agent in making that good news a reality As a biblical scholar Scot McKnight says Jesus did really believe and know that this was God s assignment for him Over and over in the pages of the Gospels we see Jesus reaching out to those marginalized by society over and over inviting such people to the table to dine with him and his friends Reaching out to the marginalized In today s passage Jesus talks about two prophets in Israel called Elijah and Elisha When it was a severe famine God sent Elijah only to a Gentile widow among many widows God s mercy and grace for the poor and powerless flows to outside of Israel and we certainly think this is theologically correct Then God sent a prophet Elisha only to a Gentile leper called Naaman among many lepers Naaman was a powerful man not the poor not the marginalized But God graciously removed his skin disease from his body and he got healed God s grace is unpredictable and there seem to be no operating rules for God s grace God s mercy even flows to the powerful and the rich God favors all McKnight says that God s loving arms are around the globe around adults and trees and mountains children and rivers and birds moms and dads and lions and elephants little poor children and adults poor people and cultures and ethnicities and governments and art shows and building project Around golf courses and sweat shops around country clubs and inner city slums around high rise penthouses and humans in ghettos My friend shared this story when I was at the seminary This story goes back to the 1960s It s about a young man named Bill who could best be described as a hippie He was in his early twenties recently graduated from
