  • A Bunch of Bunnies
allergic to cats and kept sneezing in the lion s mouth And about her days popping out of hats and sliding out of sleeves By lunch time the bunnies were tired out from laughing After lunch Harriet and Jackie put the bunnies in a big hammock stretched between two trees As they rocked the hammock the bunnies fell asleep Jackie sighed Harriet I don t know how you do it These bunnies are an awful pawful The next day Harriet said Jackie it s your turn Give the bunnies lunch while I go shopping without bunnies underfoot Jackie gulped Do you think I can do it Harriet just smiled Lunch was lined up on the table Carrot goo for Hoppy and Floppy carrot stew for Jumper and Thumper carrot soup for Bucky and Lucky and new carrots to chew for Puff Muff Fluff and Spotty Lunchtime called Jackie Hoppy and Floppy slurped the carrot goo but before long they were rubbing the goo on each other Stop that you two said Jackie Then Jumper and Thumper wouldn t eat carrot stew We want the soup We want the soup they cried It s stew for you said Bucky The soup is for us said Lucky As Jackie sorted out the bowls a carrot flew by The four biggest bunnies weren t chewing They threw new carrots all over the place Give us carrot cake We want carrot cake they cried Soon all ten bunnies wanted carrot cake So Jackie Rabbit sliced up carrot cake The little bunnies jumped into the hammock after lunch Swing us Jackie Higher Higher As Jackie rocked the hammock she told the story about the clown swinging back and forth back and forth on the trapeze She sang Rock a bye Bunny on the tree top

  • Jackie gets a message - Part One
sniffed I deliver important messages and packages to animals in the forest I already have my first assignment She waved an envelope under Sam s nose It s a letter for Bertie the Badger Sam snorted You In the forest Jackie you re a city rabbit You ll get lost You will freeze in the snow Hmmph said Jackie I won t get lost because I have a map I won t freeze because I have my own fur coat Sam smiled and flicked his tail Why don t you wait until tomorrow I ll come with you if we can leave in the morning Jackie shook her head This message can t wait I promised to deliver it right away A delivery rabbit always keeps her promise Sam waved goodbye as Jackie Rabbit set off with her message and her map and a carrot for supper When she reached the edge of town Jackie stopped to check her map Climb the old stone fence and cross the grassy meadow That s easy she said as she hopped over the crunchy snow But by the time she reached the big pine grove across the meadow it was almost too dark to read the map Maybe I should sleep here tonight and get an early start in the morning Jackie thought I have to keep my promise and deliver this message tomorrow As Jackie munched her carrot she shivered It s colder in the forest than I thought Maybe I ll build a little fire to keep warm But Jackie Rabbit had never built a fire before When she piled the twigs and the sticks she couldn t keep them burning Paper she thought I need paper to light the fire Jackie looked at the two pieces of paper she carried

  • Jackie gets a message - Part Two
into a little meadow Helloooo she called Not even a whisper answered Jackie sighed Where are the meadow mice when you need them If I can t find someone to show me the way I ll have to go back But then I d break my promise And then I d lose my job But Jackie couldn t go back anyway The snow was falling so fast it had covered her tracks across the meadow already Just then she heard a sound in the brush Maybe this is the place where Bertie Badger lives Excuse me she called politely Are you Bertie Badger Then she stopped It wasn t Bertie Badger There was a big grey dog pawing in the snow It turned at the sound of Jackie s voice Its golden eyes flashed at her Oh no she gulped A wolf As the wolf smiled at her she looked around She took a big breath and dived into a snow bank Under the soft snow Jackie wiggled and wiggled burrowing deeper and deeper Can a snow bank save me from a hungry wolf she wondered Jackie squirmed along the ground Suddenly she felt herself sliding down down down into darkness A rabbit hole I m safe Jackie sniffed her way along the black tunnel I hope whoever owns this hole is on a winter vacation Anybody home she whispered No one answered Safe in the hole Jackie had time to think I have to deliver this letter today If only I could get away from the wolf She thought a little more This rabbit hole must have a back door Jackie wiggled her way through the darkness until she could see a faint light in the distance My escape She made her way to the back door and pushed

  • Jackie gets a message Part 3
eyes peeked out Friendly eyes thought Jackie as the child continued to work away at the snare In a few minutes the child freed Jackie s foot and rubbed that foot very gently between soft woolen mittens There said the child softly See if you can hop Jackie jumped a few times carefully It hurts a little said Jackie but I think my leg will be all right You saved my life Jackie added as she turned to face the child Then Jackie told the child about her adventure burning the map losing her way hiding from the wolf Oh that wolf won t hurt you the child promised He s my friend I won t let him eat rabbits If you want to find Bertie the Badger look over there His hole is just over the next hill behind the big rock in a small clearing The child pointed the way There s an easy way home too Down the hill and along the stream Now I will be able to keep my promise Jackie smiled She turned around to say thank you but there was nobody there Hey Where are you Jackie called I want to thank you for saving me I don t even know your name Not so much as a whisper answered As Jackie looked around she couldn t see any footprints in the snow The mysterious child had just disappeared Thank you whoever you are Jackie whispered I ll never forget you she added as she remembered those smiling eyes Then she hopped up the hill to deliver her message and keep her promise It was hard to wait 3 weeks to find out how the story ends But life is like that We sometimes have to wait quite a while to find the
