benefits of being outside and we use this as ammunition in the various arenas that we work in So in a way I sometimes feel as though we re trying to sell this truth My friend responded by alluding that being outdoors is innate So we are not selling this so much as we have forgotten it And so for her we are simply reminding people of what they already know and feel in their gut that being outside is fundamental to our existence I agree with my friend I think a lot of people have forgotten how integral our connection with nature is Yet I have seen time and time again non profits who have to pitch their program as unique and innovative in order to receive funding At times they have no choice but to sell the benefits of time outside And I see more and more people who seem more and more addicted to their technology who walk around with heads down The internet has created this global community and yet we have trouble actually talking to our neighbours Is it worthwhile for us non profits OE s and all those who care about spending time outside to spend all of this time and energy trying to convince others of the benefits that so many have seemingly forgotten Or are we continually walking uphill and instead simply need to let people realize on their own some of the important things they ve forgotten I pose this question simply as a result of some thoughts that have been sputtering through my brain and that are by no means clear My friend Jen arrived in Calgary this morning and I was able to enjoy the run through Calgary Tomorrow I run for the mountains I have seen them in

elementary students are just below the age bracket for which research points to for screen time the students are still surprised that the average hours spent in front of screens in a given week is 53 And when we talk about what percentage of students who are meeting the guideline of an hour of moderate to vigorous physical activity a day their jaws drop to find out it s only 7 Thanks to Ms Ketcheson for having me and for the fuel ie cookies as I continue to run west This morning I visited Colonel Walker Community School My friend Kristin teaches there although sadly she had to be back in Ontario today But in chatting with the principal I found out the students are running the Terry Fox run this coming Friday and a goal throughout the year is to focus on footprints What footprint did Terry Fox leave What footprint will these students leave I think it s important question to ask of ourselves I suppose it is my hope that among those footprints that nourish and develop over the coming years that there is a commitment to spend more time outside a realization that all that sedentary time in front of screens isn t all it s cracked up to be With these younger students those footprints have time to be influenced A growing trend of parents and an education system that sees the value of time spent outdoors might go a long way in creating some footprints that see physical activity and a connection with nature as integral to being a healthy human being From The Road Video Blogs TMO New Year Sunday 01 January 2012 18 40 Day numberless days Tuesday 01 November 2011 00 00 Day 274 279 212 6 km total 7524 5

weeks until I finish in Victoria my brain can t seem to process or even fathom being done I m not sure when that moment will come but for now it seems like a long time to go And a lot of distance to run Being defeated is only a temporary condition giving up is what makes it permanent Having said this I am anticipating my time in the Calgary area I have some school visits lined up and will have a chance to visit with some good friends over a couple of days The biggest piece of news that relieves some of my stress is having my friend Jen come to help drive through the Rockies A couple of weeks ago I started feeling anxious about going through the mountains on my own particularly in October Jen graciously agreed to help me for 3 weeks and I am extremely grateful to have this much needed help The quote above resonates with me today I think there can be many moments through life where we can feel defeated in something we re doing whatever that something is I certainly feel that way when I look at my watch on a given day and I ve only run 20 km and am dead tired but still have another 30 to go Somehow it s finding that balancing act of accepting a sense of defeat but knowing you ll push on to finish whatever it is you ve set out to do Easier said than done no doubt But in these days I am learning how much each step both literally and figuratively add up From The Road Video Blogs TMO New Year Sunday 01 January 2012 18 40 Day numberless days Tuesday 01 November 2011 00 00 Day 274 279 212

  • Day 242-246 – 177.1 km (total – 6332.1 km) | Take Me Outside
I wondered what Terry Fox would have thought of running through the prairies what he would have felt hitting the Alberta border what it would be like to finally make it to his home province of BC His journey was cut short as the cancer spread throughout his body We sometimes want to attach metaphors and with cancer we often talk about winning or losing the battle with cancer Jack Layton s passing a month ago conjured up these exact metaphors in the media as well It can give the imagery that if somehow they had just fought harder they may have been able to beat this disease But Jack nor Terry lost any battle They simply died of a disease that is beyond the control of what we know and understand What Terry Fox did do is inspire a nation He found a way to pass the torch to let others continue what he started And so as I ran yesterday along with thousands of other Canadians we carry that torch with pride and conviction And although cancer research might not be my objective to running I still believe I am carrying the torch that Terry passed along Because his torch was about more than just cancer His torch was about believing in something and doing something about it The best part is we can all pick up that torch and run with it I m so thankful to my friend Audrey who has helped me the last several days with driving She drove back to Regina yesterday and so I m flying solo until Calgary It feels great to be in Alberta and to feel the shift from prairie to badlands From The Road Video Blogs TMO New Year Sunday 01 January 2012 18 40 Day numberless days

  • Day 241 – 47.2 km (total – 6155 km) | Take Me Outside
It seems as though we are back in junior high where everything has become a popularity contest Or maybe it s always been that way Today while running I listened to some CBC One of the programs I enjoy is called Spark hosted by Norah Young One of her guests this week was Cathy Davidson a professor at Duke University The conversation revolved around the education system and how it needs reform particularly focused on the way that current generations of youth pay attention We need education that supports the new ways we ought to pay attention she says She goes on to argue that there is no evidence to back up the fact that playing video games and all of our time in front of screens has any affect on our attention I d have to find the research again but I m next to positive that studies have shown that children between the ages of 1 5 have an increased risk of ADHD with every additional hour they spend in front of screens So I find it interesting when a supposed expert has free say on an issue without being challenged you can hear the full interview here My brain is full of tangents right now with hardly anything concise to say at all But I am fearful when we start talking about our education system needing to follow suit to meet the needs of a generation that is offered sound bites tweets and endless status updates as their way of making sense of this world From The Road Video Blogs TMO New Year Sunday 01 January 2012 18 40 Day numberless days Tuesday 01 November 2011 00 00 Day 274 279 212 6 km total 7524 5 km Sunday 23 October 2011 00 00 Lake Superior Video

and diverse ecosystem provides homes to thousands of birds Wetlands are everywhere along the highway and though waterfowl are used to the loudness of trucks and transports they spook easily at a quiet guy running only a few feet closer I feel bad as every wetland I run past results in a disruption to the daily routine of these fowl Cows give me their full attention as well I calmly tell them that I m just another human being but they still look at me suspiciously Rightly so I suppose The salt flats west of Moose Jaw almost seem like an anomaly It s as though you ve been transported from the prairies to the remote Arctic Beautiful wildflowers line the side of the highway and the hawks soar high above looking for their next meal in the fields I have spent a lot of my days looking at the ground while running through the prairies avoiding grasshoppers crickets caterpillars and butterflies Adaption is a funny thing the grasshoppers can stick their landing when they jump into the grass but if they stay on the asphalt their hop results in what can only be described as a crash landing They tumble and roll the landing is anything but graceful Salt plains There is a vastness to the prairies that has reminded me of how big this country is And to those who say the prairies are dead flat you should come run with me The rolling fields provide stunning vistas the contrast of golden wheat fields against rich blue skies are the perfect combination The prairies perhaps take some time to fall in love with but once you ve fallen it s a hard love to let go of On a personal running note Sunday was my longest running day

favourite moments was running a lap with Matthew after the other students had gone back to class Matthew s autism certainly didn t stand in the way of beating me in a race he was quite fast It was another hot day in the prairies I have had issues having enough water but just made it today getting in about 51 km My good friend Audrey had commitments this weekend so it was back to hitchhiking today I think people wonder what I m doing in the middle of nowhere with my thumb out The gentleman who picked me up poked fun at me for just that but had kind words once I told him my story Dinner is calling my name pasta again From The Road Video Blogs TMO New Year Sunday 01 January 2012 18 40 Day numberless days Tuesday 01 November 2011 00 00 Day 274 279 212 6 km total 7524 5 km Sunday 23 October 2011 00 00 Lake Superior Video Blog Tuesday 02 August 2011 00 00 Day 146 38 6 km total 3164 7 km Sunday 12 June 2011 00 00 Day 133 Tuesday 31 May 2011 00 00 Times Colonist Thursday 27
