  • Day 86/87 – 80.3 km (total – 2008 km) | Take Me Outside
in the Atlantic I think I felt that sense of excitement he would have felt yesterday decades ago That sense of purpose That passion He also experienced lousy weather and cramped living quarters like we have And long days on the road where nothing exciting really happens For me personally there is comfort in knowing that Comfort in knowing that one of my heroes had good days and bad days but was driven by an ultimate goal beyond that of just running across the country The view last night from my bedroom window No one will ever duplicate what Terry Fox did But I think he would be okay with us emulating what he did and the spirit with which he did it We all have convictions things we are passionate about that drive us to evoke change And those convictions can be played out everywhere I think about many of my friends who are educators who have those convictions and live them out daily with their students I think about people who work for non profits and the drive they have This extends beyond the scope of getting youth outside There are so many issues that face our world our community And regardless of what that issue is I think Terry Fox inspired a lot of us to persevere To remember that change doesn t happen overnight sometimes even years or decades But with your convictions you continue to take one step at a time To realize there will be moments of feeling like progress is being made with those issues and other moments where the uphill battle seems endless His convictions surrounded cancer and cancer research But I think his legacy and inspiration for this country extends beyond that For me it s about taking that first step

rider she wasn t decided tandem riding wasn t for them either I ve taken four or five different kids on the back of our tandem Every single one of them quickly matched my cadence and adapted gracefully to tandem riding That s yet another great thing about biking with kids they are so flexible To turn our tandem from a two seater into a three seater we installed a back seat for Jasper behind Anna Sierra s seat Jasper s four which is quite old for these back seats that usually suit 1 3 year olds but he s got the build of a hill climbing Marco Pantani and still fits his back seat The kids love chatting together back there I have had to stop the bike to deal with the occasional squabble or to remind Jasper to keep his feet off Anna s back but in general it s peaceful Sometimes on a long ride Anna Sierra tells Jasper a story and he falls asleep I know it really can be as sweet as that Kathleen Wilker Tom Jupp and Jasper Heffernan Wilker on a Bike Friday Riding beside the Ottawa River is more fun with friends Photos Courtesy Sara Jane Campbell But I digress Jasper and I dropped Anna Sierra off at school and our friend Tom who had ridden his own bike to school to drop off his big sister took Anna Sierra s place We lowered the seat and handlebars a little with our handy allen key and off we went waving at Tom s mama on her super cool fixie The boys and I rode down to the Ottawa River Pathway It s a short ride from school And then we just kept riding All morning until it was time for Tom to

  • Day 32 – 39.3 km (total – 628.2 km) | Take Me Outside
July afternoon there was a knock on the door and my mother called me up from the basement By all accounts we d both be considered the same two boys in their teens looking for direction But we couldn t have been more different so I thought He had cut off jean shorts and purple doc martens ohh and the most atrocious Vanilla Ice hair I had ever seen Who was this skateboarding punk at my front door Our mothers introduced us and we were obligated to utter a hello but they carried the conversation from there It was awkward and embarrassing My mother was relentless telling me I should call Dave and do something with him I could only ward her off for so long nagging mothers seem to get their way more often than not love ya mom Anyway on a sunny July afternoon I called Dave and asked him if he wanted to go for a bike ride He agreed so I rode over and we headed down into Sunnybrook Park As we started riding I asked quietly So do you like sports His answer was short simple and to the point Nope not really For the next 45 minutes we rode in silence Not another word was uttered the only sound exchanged was the changing of gears on our bikes We didn t talk the rest of the summer BFF s That was the start of a friendship that has spanned the last 20 years Not just a friendship a bona fide best friend One that has included canoe trips great hikes building quinzhees and yes more bike rides I don t know who I d be if it weren t for my friendship with Dave It s amazing what can come from a simple bike

s travel Newfoundland in the winter The TCH was in rough shape a lot of blowing snow and poor conditions We thought we d try the drive we didn t last long We pulled into a gas station that thankfully had a restaurant and warmed up a bit After waiting the weather out it turned into a beautiful later half of the afternoon So although the roads weren t great sorry mom I decided to run a bit The highway was quiet and although I was only able to run about 12k before dusk set in it felt so great to get out there and see some blue sky A gorgeous sunset to end my day between Springdale and Deer Lake One of the sections we re trying to explore on our new website is called Canadians Outside There are individuals across this country be they teachers parents or students who are committed to getting children and youth outside We d like to share some of their stories with people who visit our site So if you know of anyone who comes to mind we re looking for a 2 paragraph summary of what they ve done It might be that they started a school food garden or maybe a walk to school initiative with the kids in their neighbourhood Whatever the story we d like to share it Our hope is that some of these stories might inspire others in different communities to do the same So check it out From The Road Video Blogs TMO New Year Sunday 01 January 2012 18 40 Day numberless days Tuesday 01 November 2011 00 00 Day 274 279 212 6 km total 7524 5 km Sunday 23 October 2011 00 00 Lake Superior Video Blog Tuesday 02 August 2011 00 00

pressure as we have schools lined up and to an extent are trying to keep to a timeframe So the running turned into a run walk combo Not entirely happy but fine At about 30 k the RV passed me on the TCH to stop and give me a break Next time I looked up the RV was on a severe tilt into the snow bank Sarah had hit a soft shoulder and the tires slipped down into the ditch Okay So CAA blah blah blah A lovely young man stopped to see if we were okay I said we were fine so he went to turn around and drive away but hit the soft shoulder himself and then there were two vehicles stuck A tow truck was on its way one big enough to pull an RV out but it was going to take awhile as it was coming from Deer Lake A decision was made between Sarah and I that it made sense for me to keep going Waiting around wasn t really going to help the situation The dogs were okay in the RV and aside from the contents of the entire left side of the RV being dumped onto the right everyone was safe So off I went Let me speed up the story a bit I ran walked 47 km before Sarah was able to pick me up We decided that we needed a warm space and a day to recoup So off to Deer Lake After two motels that wouldn t take dogs we found a cottage 15 minutes out of Deer Lake that did Looked out the window this morning about 25 cm of snow had come down in the night Our RV is snowed in and the owner of this place is

ll listen for a faint click A few seconds later the fan will come on Step 1 successful I ll wait I feel like I m always waiting throughout the night for the 2nd click It s louder The furnace kicks in after that 2nd click At least it s supposed to The anticipation of heat keeps me awake I m not kidding not for a second Throughout the night my sleep is interrupted as I wait for that 2nd click Most of the time it comes But there is a chance it won t Sometimes it doesn t I wait for that little wave of warm air that momentarily exists before it is sucked away by numerous drafts spread throughout the 24 feet that is our home Our generator is currently broken For real We re plugged in to the side of the local Sally Ann church Thank God for my parents chosen career A view from the Riverwood Trail The wind will rock our square home back and forth It s more of a violent rock than a gentle one It certainly doesn t put me to sleep that wind Dawn will come eventually Running clothes are waiting to be thrown on Cold ones My feet will adjust to the damp running shoes that will carry me through my day And I will smile I will smile because we made it through another day I will smile because no matter how cold my hands are I feel alive I will smile because spring is one day closer I will smile because I am living my dream And I will smile because there is no reason not to From The Road Video Blogs TMO New Year Sunday 01 January 2012 18 40 Day numberless days Tuesday 01 November 2011
