be just as important as the curriculum students are learning If you combine this with the positive outcomes that come from students spending time outside it doesn t take long to see the real benefits of students learning in an outdoor setting And while this school in Carpe is not the norm it exists and in fact has a waiting list because of the belief that students can be educated effectively outside of a desk and four walls The conversations we continue to have with students are quite enlightening We were back at Bicentennial this morning to visit the P 6 s who were amazing Our favourite answer when asked what some of the not so great things about video games are was They make your brain turn to mush The elementary teachers gave the students an extended recess this morning and activities ranged from skip rope to basketball to blowing bubbles to the giant parachute that I m sure we all remember from our youth The schoolyard was relatively small but students were out there being active breathing in the fresh air and enjoying the sun on a beautiful day We made our way over to Crichton Park Elementary this afternoon and met with all the students in the gym The month of March at this particular school has a focus on healthy active living and eating Today was crazy hair day and tomorrow is fruit and vegetable day There were some amazing haircuts and hair colours and hair accessories super fun From The Road Video Blogs TMO New Year Sunday 01 January 2012 18 40 Day numberless days Tuesday 01 November 2011 00 00 Day 274 279 212 6 km total 7524 5 km Sunday 23 October 2011 00 00 Lake Superior Video Blog Tuesday 02 August 2011

was a popular hit This was the school she has taught at it was like Tom Cruise was in town Pretty amazing to see how much she got mobbed in the hallway and the interesting conversations that were had on our walk But as we chatted with them we really wanted to know why the exuberance we saw in the younger grades in the morning of being outside slowly seemed to fade with age One remark was that fun activities change What was fun in grade 2 is obviously different in grade 9 In a world full of endless hours texting and typing and surfing and controlling I think a little game of tag outside could make a lot of people laugh and smile more than they realize I m a big fan of a TED talk by Ken Robinson where he explores the education system around the world In one segment he makes the argument that we educate students out of creativity with the focus in school being on the math and sciences and less on the arts We re all born creative we can all draw when we re kids but somehow we turn into these beings that lose that creativity And I can t help but think the same point can be applied for being outside Kids love being outside when they re young So by the time they reach their teenage years why is it so much less important Perhaps our fun activities as we grow older include more technology which keeps us inside more which keeps us sitting still more often And again we try hard to say that those fun technology based activities aren t necessarily bad But are we somehow educating our kids out of a sense of love for being outside and

checked out As a result it was one of the tougher 19 km I ve run The fact that rain was coming at me sideways didn t really help When Sarah picked me up we stopped so I could change out of my wet running clothes Long story short we got out our 4th flat tire It was 5 o clock on a Saturday afternoon and so everything was closed We managed to get down to Halifax after pumping it a few times along the way and trying to super glue the leak in the valve So it s a mixed bag of emotions being in Halifax We are frustrated with the RV and all the challenges it has given us We are putting feelers out to anyone who might know someone in the RV world Sarah and I tried for 4 months to find a dealership that would donate one for 8 months and came up empty handed So if you happen to be reading this and know someone who has their foot in the door of the RV world we d love to hear from you On the flip side of things there are lots of things to smile about Today felt like spring and both Sarah and I were out in our sandals Sarah has reunited with her mother and will enjoy a week of seeing friends in the area We are excited to visit schools throughout the week We are at Sarah s school Tuesday and her students will be ecstatic to see her So it is a week we look forward to After almost 2 months on the road we re more than ready for a breather And my legs are thankful for a week of rest From The Road Video Blogs TMO New Year
