show everyone We know those teachings are there but what we remember is the day He SHOWED US who He is why He came It was a dramatic act Jesus had decided to ride into Jerusalem in such a way that anyone who saw Him would see this act as an unmistakable claim to be the Messiah God s anointed King We believe this to be a well thought out deliberate act It is hardly likely that Jesus would tell His disciples to go and untie a donkey belonging to someone that neither He nor His disciples knew Such a person would have chased the disciples down the street yelling Stop thieves Jesus likely would have had friends in the village who knew of His plan and had made the arrangements for someone to pick up the donkey with the password The Lord has need of it So the donkey was brought to Jesus The disciples put their garments on its back and Jesus rode that donkey into Jerusalem Why did He do this Why a donkey The donkey was the animal of choice for a king to ride when he was coming in peace A horse was the animal a king would ride when he was coming to make war In the book The Man Born To Be King there is a scene where Jesus has to make a choice Baruch head of an armed band of Jewish revolutionaries ou to destroy the power of Rome over the Jewish people urged Jesus to ride into Jerusalem on a horse as the signal to all to begin a revolution to oust Rome Only a conqueror would ride into Jerusalem on a horse But Jesus chose a donkey and many were disappointed even among His disciples Simon the Zealot one of Jesus disciples was among those who passionately desired a conquering Messiah one to lead them in a successful war against Rome There is even some reasonable speculation that Judas betrayed Jesus because Jesus did not live up to Judas expectations for a military Messiah Jesus came to be a different kind of Messiah The royalty of Jesus as King of Kings and Lord of Lords is not less that that of a military king but more His was the activity of the love of God to enter into and rule the hearts of individuals In the strength of this activity Jesus dared to make His entry into Jerusalem The throngs of people along the road were caught up in a sense of anticipation and joy They knew something incredible was happening even if they didn t really understand what So they cheered and welcomed Him on Palm Sunday as He entered Jerusalem And when Jesus later seemed not to be what they expected they turned on Him and called for His death just a few days later Jesus chose the way of peace and that way was rejected and still is rejected in many places including Jerusalem today The way

the Falls One man in particular had tendered a very large bet Blondin would not make it Blondin set out wheeling the man carefully on the tight wire who you can imagine was white knuckling it all the way clinging to the sides of the barrow and not daring to look down Blondin breezily passed the halfway point on the 1 600 foot rope The man on the other bank who had made the large bet knew that unless something drastic happened he was surely going to lose a fortune Surreptitiously he slipped away He went to one of the support ropes that kept the main tightrope taut and stopped it from all side to side movement And when no one was looking he cut it Twa ang Suddenly this tensioning rope flew free Blondin still had his man in the barrow with many feet to go There they were 160 feet above the water with Blondin s tightrope vibrating violently like a plucked bowstring The wheelbarrow pitched crazily from side to side Any moment now the rim of the wheel would come off the rope With no safety net both men would be pitched into the raging grave of Niagara Falls below Blondin s brave passenger was now out of his mind with fear screaming blue murder and they were only seconds away from death Then Blondin spoke and his voice snapped like that of a military commander Stand up he commanded the terrified man Stand up Grab my shoulders The man stared at him in unbelieving desperation Let go and stand up Let go the wheelbarrow Do it or die In total terror the man somehow let go and fought his way up from the rocking barrow Your arms round my neck Now your legs round my waist What choice did he have This was life or death whether Blondin was right or wrong he was all he had It was obey or die He threw his arms around Blondin s neck he wrapped his legs around Blondin s waist Blondin took the strain and stayed balanced there every trained and honed muscle in his body reacting desperately to the swinging wire under his feet The wheelbarrow empty and abandoned somersaulted down more than sixteen stories into the Falls and smashed into the water to be swept away Imagine the sheer terror of this man He had nothing left to cling to now but the man with the power and skill the expert who had dared the rope before time and dangerous time again and still lived Blondin somehow was still standing on the crazily swaying rope arms stretched wide and shifting every second for balance with his passenger now locked in a death grip around him And it was then he heard Blondin say the final thing that saved his life Hold on said Blondin But don t fight If we are going to make it alive you must not fight me You must move when I

person who is in Christ He uses this term in many places and in many ways Paul challenges us to stand firm in the love of Christ Only in Christ only with Christ can we resist the temptations that strike us Only in Christ with Christ can we stand firm be courageous in how we love Christ and serve our neighbour We know there are people who when we are around them bring out the worst in us when it is easy to do the wrong thing That s why our parents were so worried about who our friends were who we hung around with They didn t want us to fall in with the wrong crowd But there are also people who bring out the best in us When we re with them we can face challenges courageously withstand temptation and stand up for what is right We respect and admire these people We wouldn t want to let them down Our only safety in temptation is to be in the Love of Christ We admire Jesus and respect Jesus and we don t want to let Him down And when we hang around with others who are in Christ we will not fall in with the wrong crowd because we enjoy being with the right crowd It makes things easier to face when we face them together with Christ The Church and the individual Christian can only stand firm when we stand in Christ Paul calls upon two other Christians Euodia and Syntyche to be of one mind in Christ There can be no real unity unless that unity is in Christ In ordinary human affairs it repeatedly happens that the most diverse people are held together in a common fellowship because they give all their allegiance to a great leader Their loyalty to each other depends on their loyalty to that leader Take away the leader and the whole thing disintegrates falls apart and even fragments We can never really love each other as brothers and sisters without loving them in Christ Paul also calls the Philippians to rejoice in the Lord Jesus The one thing that we all need to learn about joy is that joy and happiness are not the same thing Joy has nothing to do with the material things we have or how good a day we re having or how healthy we are Joy has nothing to do with these external things We ve seen it often A person living in luxurious surroundings and appearing to have it all can be miserable and even decide to end it all while a person who is dirt poor by the world s standards can be filled with joy The person who is beaten down by bad health financial ruin betrayal by friends or family can live with a sense of peace and joy that s beyond our comprehension That s because it is a peace that only God can give Scripture calls it a

human ness To err is human we are not perfect We will not always adhere to the diet budget or exercise program but that doesn t mean we have to abandon our plans Instead it means picking ourselves up refocusing on our goals and getting on with it We need to forgive ourselves for occasional slips and not let them deter us Frequent slips indicate the need for further reflection What are the feelings and circumstances that trigger the slips Can we avoid them or handle them in a more positive way Are we really committed to our original goals Perhaps they need to be modified Are they in fact our goals or are they someone else s goals for us Other people s goals are rarely satisfactory motivators for our changes If we are really committed to the goals but they are large e g losing 20 kg we may need to break them into smaller more manageable chunks e g losing 5 6 kg in 3 months Each small success increases our self confidence and self esteem and motivates us to keep working toward the next level Support from family or friends also helps to keep us on
