December 4 2012 Lap Swimming Etiquette by J C Besner Lap Swimming Etiquette J C Besner It s that time of year when bikes get placed on trainers and when you start hauling out the winter running gear It s also the time of year when people focus a little more on pool workouts Why slog outside in the ice and snow when you can be immersed and relaxed in a nice warm aquatic environment complete with the pleasing aroma of chlorine to soothe your mind and body As our sport grows and as more people get into triathlon more runners and cyclists decide to brave the pool It seems that very few competitive swimmers get into triathlon while athletes with a strong base in running or cycling start triathlon later in their athletic careers While it is daunting enough to learn the technique of swimming front crawl efficiently triathletes must also try to figure out just how to fit in with all of these weird swimmers For new swimmers pool etiquette can be confusing It doesn t help that many experienced swimmers don t take the time to share their lane wisdom with newbies Hopefully the tips I offer here will provide you with all the information you need to prevent glares from the water geeks you share a lane with during your workouts Show up on time Especially for planned workouts show up on time to start the warm up set with everyone else If you need to warm up or stretch on deck before jumping in the pool show up early If you do show up late find out where everyone else is in the workout and start with them You just can t do a good swim workout if people are on different sets Pick the right lane for your speed If you re not sure which lane you should be in ask the coach If you re swimming outside of a coached workout follow the signs at the pool for lane speed Be honest with yourself about your speed If you happen to be a fast swimmer and octogenarians are swimming sidestroke in the fast lane there s nothing wrong with apologetically asking them to switch lanes Swimming in a circle Most people already know this one Always swim on the right side of the lane so that you swim in a counter clockwise circle around the lane Even if you are the only person in the lane Someone may jump in while you are halfway down the pool and you may get into a collision if you re blithely swimming in the middle of the lane Avoid splitting the lane if there are only two of you if a third person wants to start swimming everyone will be disrupted Five second rule During a coached workout leave the wall in five second intervals Not only with this allow you to accurately determine your lap times it will prevent bunching up and people hitting other
