  • Baseball - The History of Victoria and District Baseball Association
    The proceeds were distributed among the membership leagues which included Little League 12 and under Babe Ruth Connie Mack Pony and the Sr Amateur League As the funds became depleted the member organizations were asked to contribute a small amount back to the association When this occurred all Little Leagues on Vancouver Island withdrew from the Association as their constitution forbade the raising of funds by Little Leaguers for any other purpose than Little League The funding of baseball in Victoria and the surrounding districts continued through the operation of a popular weekly bingo at the Victoria Curling Club taking it into the 1990 s At about the same time the BC government became responsible for the distribution of bingo funds and changes were in the wind for the Association now required to decentralize park fundraising Government licensing was now required and the responsibility for applying for a fundraising license was transferred to the individual leagues The direction of the Victoria District Baseball Association required change No longer funding district leagues Victoria and District Baseball Association became an advisory body taking on broader issues The Association hosts organization meetings for all the leagues by providing meeting space By so doing the member leagues are guaranteed a venue to run Coaching and Umpire clinics and other indoor training and social activities The Victoria and District Baseball Association also wished to recognize its founding fraternity by establishing the Gar Taylor Memorial Bursary 2004 In this inaugural year the Association at its hosted Annual District Awards Banquet presented three bursaries to three deserving college students Adam Splawski Matthew Martin and Erica Grainger The Awards Banquet is an annual event where district leagues recognize the efforts of the many volunteers who make it possible for minor baseball to excel in the district The Bert

  • Victoria's Introduction to baseball
    1838 which was described in a detailed letter written by Dr Adam E Ford published on May 5 1886 in a magazine called Sporting Life The earliest known newspaper account of a Baseball game in the United States was published 7 years later on September 11 1845 in the New York Morning News which announced a game that occurred the previous day source 19cbaseball com The historians say base ball s first organized game was played by two New York squads in Hoboken New Jersey The New York Knickerbockers and the New York Nine played under the new Kickerbocker Rules set in place by Alexander Cartwright on June 16th 1846 which laid the groundwork of the rules for the game as we know it today Alexander Cartwright was a banker umpire and very serious looking man featuring a very thick earlier 19th century hair style mustache and beard He took the rules and watched how the Old English as well as other bat and ball games were being played and turned it into something that fit the New World Culture We where blessed with organized base ball featuring the first 20 rules known as the Kickerbocker Rules In August 19 1848 news of gold discovered in California made it s way to the East Coast where Cartwright resided The New York Herald published news of the discovery which was confirmed officially by President James Polk source kipnotes com Mining1 htm Here is where it gets interesting for Victoria Baseball fans Later in 1849 three years after the first game between the Knickerbockers and the NY Nine and the following year after that New York Herald announcement of the discovery of Gold Cartwright travelled to San Francisco California There is documentation that says Cartwright brought with him a NY Knickerbockers baseball

  • The Beginning of Baseball - Victoria Baseball History 1849 - 1921
    sits today Of Course there would be no streetcar line running to the front entrance for those who thought the walk from town was too far In 1892 a try a semi pro baseball took place and later the Victoria Baseball Club played there and won the BC Championship in 1901 Outfielder Jimmy Holmes who later played Major League Baseball and long hitting Bernie Schwengers were the team s top players Schwengers who was also a soccer star and tennis player was a great slugger He turned down an 8000 dollar contract to play with the St Louis Cardinals because he didn t believe in professional sport as a career In 1903 an Inner City Baseball League was formed and lengthy newspaper reports covered the games It was before sports action photos but cartooned drawings accompanied the stories The cities first Professional baseball experience lasted only three months at the Oak Bay Ballpark in 1905 Although they were directed by Harold Homer Hal Chase then at the age of 22 years old considered the finest first baseman in the game and who later joined the Chicago White Sox and New York Highlanders early Yankees but rain poor play and the long trek out to the Ballpark resulted in low attendance so the team was transferred to Spokane The local boys took over the diamond and the Fernwood Base ball Club won the City League and the Amateur Baseball Championship of British Columbia Professional Baseball returned in 1911 and although the Victoria Islanders who were later named the Victoria Bees lost 125 games in 151 outings they were well supported by local business and fans Young men in town were playing in an amateur city league that was won by the Victoria Capitals in 1913 The 1 914 pros managed but

    dropped back down to class B for the 1955 season During the years 1955 56 57 Victoria entered the league with The Farmer Construction semi pro baseball team The team was made up entirely of local talent such as Bill Prior Art Worth Bernie Anderson Lowell Hodges and Mike Mitchell Hodge to name a few The Northwest League has existed in various forms since 1901 and has been in its current incarnation since 1955 The original seven charter teams were the Salem Senators OR Eugene Emeralds WA Yakima Bears WA Spokane Indians WA Tri City Braves WA Wenatchee Chiefs WA and the Lewiston Broncs Idaho At the time of its 50th anniversary season in 2004 five of the seven original cities were still in the league 1978 79 Victoria Mussels of Northwest League 1980 Victoria Blues of the Northwest League 2003 Victoria Capitals Professional Baseball of the Canadian Baseball League The Victoria Capitals were members of the Canadian Baseball League that lasted two months before the league ceased operations in 2003 The Capitals played out of Royal Athletic Park and led the league in attendance averaging over 1 000 fans per game Due to a highly receptive community the Capitals were able to attract fans by combining local business sponsorship with affordable family entertainment Unfortunately the other teams in the league did not receive such a response The league was forced to halt play in the middle of the 2003 season after new league owner Jeff Mallett part owner of the San Francisco Giants and co founder of Yahoo decided the league business model was destined for failure Although the intent was to restart the league in 2004 the league s assets were eventually sold off and play was never resumed 2004 Victoria Royals Summer Collegiate Baseball Club played experimental
