    both me and my grade 10 students The research question was simply framed so the basic focus was clear to the students We walked through the mission and the basic format of Virtual Historian and the tools and resources available At the end of class we had a preliminary discussion starting with the focussing question Amazingly kids had started to construct answers to the research question and they had pulled out various pieces of evidence to support their ideas a lively debate ensued In the end most students acknowledged that this was the most successful they had been at constructing an interpretation of history based on evidence my words not theirs and that our discussion had been quite good everyone had sufficient evidence to support a position Craig Winegarder Ottawa Carleton District School Board As historians we are always looking for new ways to develop in our students the appreciation for history and for the lives and event of the past The Virtual Historian has done this for us This new and innovative technological tool has brought together many types of media presentation from archival film footage never before used historical documents audio and sound clips and primary documents our students otherwise would never have access to The integration of this technology into research and essay writing process will reap great rewards in the learning process for all students In particular student with learning disabilities and or difficulties have the opportunities to network with other students on a level never before enjoyed The Virtual Historian is a look forward into the future methodology of teaching and presenting the concepts of history inquiry to students The level of research and ease of students use allow a depth of understanding that would take weeks in an ordinary class room setting The Virtual

    the application of knowledge through meaningful investigations and inquiry based activities To know more about historical thinking and why it matters watch this short video from expert Sam Wineburg The VH 2 0 situates learning in an active and practical context All history cases are designed to promote inquiry skills h istorical knowledge acquisition and the development of critical thinking and literacy skills To assist students in their strategic and analytical practices the VH 2 0 offers various learning tools and scaffolds including worksheets lexicons and interactive learning guides For each history case practical activities engage students in high cognitive challenges These challenges build on a series of intellectual processes and key concepts well recognized in history education Among these processes used in the VH 2 0 are Adopting an inquisitive and open minded attitude toward the past and different ways of life Establishing the historical significance of the past Using primary and secondary source evidence to infer knowledge Identifying continuity and change in history Analyzing the causes and consequences of actions and events in history Taking historical perspectives and developing historical empathy Understanding the ethical dimension of history Developing critical literacy skills Research indicates that learners will not develop

  • Dr. Stéphane Lévesque, Director of the Virtual History Lab | The Virtual Historian
    of Education University of Ottawa His research focuses on students historical thinking and consciousness Canadian history citizenship education and new media and technology in education In the early spring of 2011 Dr Lévesque opened the Virtual Historian Laboratory VH Lab Funded by Canadian Foundation for Innovation this is the first research centre in Canada to study the on line learning of history Innovative approaches such as eye tracking analysis are used to study the methods and quality of virtual learning to clarify the needs of on line learners and to develop the models and contexts that lead to improving the design presentation and evaluation of web sites simulations and learning materials in history classrooms Dr Lévesque is very active in the national history community He is a Board member of the Canada s History Society and co founding member of The History Education Research Network Histoire et éducation en réseau THEN HiER past president of the Citizenship Education Research Network and co chair of the Teaching History interest group of the American Educational Research Association Dr Lévesque served as educational expert for the Advisory committee on the establishment of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights as well as curriculum expert
