  • Practice, practice, practice – and evolve
to be still relaxed and ready that the teachings from the coursework and drop in practices slip in Music and its vibrations this is the one of the most spectacular insights that the course and time in the drop in practices gave me The music the vibrations that are felt after the sound leaves the ears is a place to dwell For me being untrained and now happily so music is nothing but abstraction I have no words to attach to this or that sound so it enters my body without a label and without analysis Music is only feeling and as medicine it soothes and permeates Through imagination I ride the vibrations out until the whole of the universe as small or as large as I may feel it at that moment in time is encompassed As Dr Bali often said the universe without is the universe within feel it Practice practice practice and evolve By the end of the course we know that there is no other way However vast the darkness we must supply our own light Stanley Kubrick And so most importantly through the study and engagement of the totality of Dr Bali s method I have been given a complete practice showing the way with surprise toward further evolvement A means to supply my own light How the Dr Bali Method of Yoga can help to manage everyday stress induce the relaxation response The routine invites us to focus attention within the body giving us somewhere to place our concentration and thus the opportunity to settle emerges The routine decongests stress releases as the body responds reorganizes relaxes engages health As space is created in the body with the asanas the mind as it sits within each cell follows becoming more spacious We let the mind s created images arise and dissipate As we stop following the thoughts and giving them energy the shift from thinking to feeling occurs we allow our mind to release as best it can from the tyranny of its thoughts We conserve our energy grow less tired younger With eyes closed our senses can withdraw from much of the surrounding external stimulus and our focus moves to inward spaciousness Comfort settles in Citta vritti nirodhah begins Our inner foundation becomes strong with the emphasis on strengthening and decongesting our core Molecular biology tells us that DNA is a code that requires context Our cells are in constant dialogue with our environment providing feedback to our DNA We are constantly being modified Plasticity is the very source of our freedom In an enriched environment we can thrive The brain has been shown to be in a constant state of upheaval High levels of stress decreases the number of new cells and so mutes our being stagnates it By engaging the practice and embracing the whole of hatha yoga by allowing the simple act of a pause to change how time feels deep relaxation occurs Healing permeates The ability to choose where

  • How yoga can help the evolution of our consciousness
the world that what create can only be a reflection of this No doubt that it is a world operating from this limited and fearful field of perception that has fueled the years of conflict and wars between the US and the Middle East with military spending at 682 billion in 2013 alone over a trillion dollars spent on the War on Drugs since 1971 the alarming increase in the rates of Depression and stress related illness and disability 1 in 10 Americans report being Depressed and the World Health Organization reports Depression as among the leading causes of disability worldwide the devastating gap among the rich and poor nations the magnitude of the global warming crisis the destruction of the rain forests the extinction of wildlife and the list goes on and on It is no wonder that faced with these seemingly insurmountable problems in the world that people feel overwhelmed depressed and hopeless As fearful a place the world may be from the perceiver even greater is the fear for many to turn the lens inward face ourselves and address the root of the problem We are all responsible for the reality that is around us It begins with each person individually As we change our inner world and realize that we are part of a greater consciousness wherein we are all connected so too do we change the landscape of our outer world Once this change of perception happens ones actions are directed by a magnanimous and infinite source that is not limited by what is perceived through the senses and the rational mind When we experience the true depths of reality the source of creation we shift our perception and experience the world as abundant benevolent loving and infinite Exploring our inner world can be a scary endeavour especially when everything around you since you were a young child has told you that you are not good enough Why would anyone want to look inward at the risk of discovering that the beliefs that they ve been internalizing their whole lives are true But as Jesus prophesied the cost of not facing ourselves is becoming too great For the first time in history we are facing the possibility of our extinction at our own hands and we need tools to help guide us towards healing ourselves and consequently the world around us Yoga is a tool that can be used to give the practitioner the courage to look inward and change consciousness Instead of seeking out ways to assuage anxiety through external means Yoga invites the practitioner to look inward for comfort and soothing It does so gently through a slight change in perception It is said that Energy flows where attention goes and this is experienced in Yoga The cost of not facing ourselves is becoming too great For the first time in history we are facing the possibility of our extinction at our own hands and we need tools to help guide us towards

  • Oncology Research
Living with cancer is very difficult and chemotherapy very painful Yoga worked for me and I wanted to scientifically demonstrate its benefits for breast cancer sufferers explains the study s originator It s the first study of its kind on the subject To carry out her research Lanctôt recruited 101 women at random who were undergoing chemotherapy in Montreal hospitals and who were diagnosed with stage 1 to 3 cancer a measure of the disease s aggressivity A group of 58 participants followed an 8 week course of yoga one and a half hours per week adapted to their physical condition They were also able to continue practicing yoga at home with the aid of a DVD The program focused on the Bali Method named after the 86 year old yoga master who over the years trained more than 300 instructors in Quebec and abroad Bali Method yoga aims to achieve a union between mind body and spirit through meditation breathing and body posture 43 other participants made up the control group Although they suffered from breast cancer similar to the others they did not practice yoga while undergoing chemotherapy The quality of life and psychological state of the 101 participants were evaluated before and after the yoga trial by means of a questionnaire a method widely accepted in the world of scientific research Lanctôt discovered that women undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer who practiced yoga saw their symptoms of depression significantly reduced versus women who did not A good complement to treatment What s more total life quality scores as well as the emotional confidence self esteem and cognitive memory concentration scores were improved compared with the control group The study shows that Bali method yoga is a technique that can complement traditional cancer treatment says Lanctôt It gives
