  • YOGA: Do you have the Jitters?
    reflection to contribute to the success of any relationship We are the architects of our own happiness We must understand and develop our inner most center that is our mind We yield in life to thoughts of problems when our mind is scattered It affects our decision making and problem solving abilities in every aspect of life Amongst some options the practice of yoga may be one of the ways to keep your calm and make the most of every situation in your life Yoga although a household word is not merely for physical exercise but simultaneously deals with physical emotional mental and spiritual aspects of our personality It brings about not only physical feelings of wellness but also builds concentration and clarity of the mind which is essential for fully functioning in life It invokes qualities such as unconditional love compassion forgiveness better tolerance to difficult situations etc It helps us to open up to new insights that create new perceptions and to grow and find new horizons in life Our choices shape our destiny and knowledge has great power in shaping our future It s only when we start taking each other for granted that stagnation in a relationship begins to take place and robs all joys of life At some point we seem to loose control over our own life which multiplies into feelings of frustration and helplessness But fortunately we have the ability to empower ourselves and be in control of our inner and outer environments where your happiness is not dependent only upon certain conditions This new perception brings about a sense of self sufficiency and inner feelings of optimism Finally it s this attitude when it is cultivated that becomes your lifetime asset to keep and maintain your life and marriage in a state of balance Like a surfer be prepared and ride and enjoy the roughness of the weather and turn it into an experience of ecstatic joyfulness Here are some practical guidelines that can help Yoga is an age old practice for body mind and spirit integration and to enhance quality of life where adversity can also become an opportunity PRANAYAMA breathing exercises and ASANAS postures are designed to induce a deep state of realization and feelings of vibrant energy necessary in everyday life PRANAYAMA will help to refine the energy field The postures will open up and unload the congested body and emotional stress It is the everyday stress that distorts our somatic structures atrophies the body constricts blood vessels and produces stress hormones They create internal imbalance and functional decline that over a period of time affects our behavioural pattern such as irritability depression insomnia low energy lack of concentration etc that take away the zest of living Stress finally catches up and affects our relationships in ways that sometimes we don t even seem to understand why we feel the way we do However our friends or mates are best mirrors to reflect our stress Stress may be the

  • Yoga helps slow learners’ mental fitness
    even to yoga instruction it calls upon their subconscious to awaken energetic potential Muscular control attained through concentration shows immediately in the intellectual behaviour of slow learning students They become more conscious of their possibilities and through a slow process of thinking discover that whatever they want to do is within their scope and depends greatly on their own will Teachers say that yoga gives the students more control over their behaviour and increases their capacity to concentrate on one subject They become able to set their minds on one point at a time and their bodies lose tension which leaves their minds more receptive Most of the students following the course have little control over their emotions Yoga trains them to control their breathing in order to control their behaviour This is an extension of the normal reaction to sigh to release tension Mr Bali says both students and teachers welcomed the course He feels it is because yoga now is fairly well accepted and people enjoy doing it People now have corrected the idea that yoga may be a form of religion It is basically a method to channel one s energies Besides adds Mr Bali it s fun and they can feel themselves benefit from it Yoga Really Helps Slowly breathe in slowly breathe out Relax your body And when your body is rested your body is strong And when your body is strong your mind is strong And when your body and mind are strong you are able to work hard and you are able to do all that you want to do all by yourself Mr Madan Bali gives yoga lessons to pupils at the elementary levels in the special classes of the M C S C The students in these special classes generally suffer from learning difficulties and are often either hyper active or very quiet and withdrawn These courses help to calm the hyper active child and to stimulate the child who is too quiet Slowly breathe in slowly breathe out Relax The class continues The children stretch on their rubber mats All is quiet Slowly breath in Mr Bali resumes his chant like instructions Then the exercises begin again and the quiet continues despite the strained expressions of children rocking on their stomachs By the end of this school year all of the 30 special classes will have benefited from Mr Bali s lessons From the beginning of the school year to the middle of November ten special classes received one hour of yoga lessons a week from Mr Bali and an additional hour a day from their own teachers These teachers had received previous coaching form Mr Bali The other 20 special classes will each be receiving a 14 week training period during the course of the year Lessons will be continued in all classes by the individual teachers The aim of these lessons is to give the child a greater physical control over his body and mind so that his

    physical deficiencies The experiment being conducted in schools administered by the Montreal Catholic School Commission involves 30 classes This is the first year that the yoga program has been in operation Eugene Boksa director of the MCSC s special education department told The Gazette that if the experiment proved successful there might be similar classes offered in secondary level special education classes The criterion of success is that the children s academic performance behaviour and concentration should improve I hope to see an improvement in their co ordination and mobility Mr Boksa said Many of them are awkward Some can t even hold a pencil Some of the children who are placed in special classes are weak in specific subjects only and receive individual attention in the classes for these deficiencies They are sent to regular classes for their other subjects however and wherever possible efforts are made to channel them back to regular sessions full time Mrs E Michaud special education teacher at Daniel O Connell School bubbles with enthusiasm when she discusses the yoga lessons I have noticed remarkable improvement in these children And they ve only been getting yoga training for two months I m really so thrilled I ve always been a firm believer in the power of exercise I had intended to do a regular exercise program with the youngsters Last summer I read up a whole lot of material on exercises that might help them When the Madan Bali landed at the door I said Allelujah my prayers are answered Not much luck She indicated a tiny child on the far side of the room who was trying desperately to get into a shoulder stand position She wasn t having much luck After a few half hearted efforts the child gave up and let
